I Am From
By Briah-Amira McCutchen
I am from a big window
At the front of the house
That lets the sunlight in
And houses condensation
I am from Aira Mitsuki’s COPY.
That song, Yellow Supercar,
Nearly describes my life
I am from a yard where
The grass shoots up, hoping
To reach the sky, only to have
Its hopes squashed as it
Is eaten by the lawn mower
I am from the forest,
Its green ample arms
Conquering the whole neighborhood.
I am from the tot-lot
Where we spent our Saturday afternoons
Until we found something better to do
I am from “If you are going to
Listen to what I have to say
Listen to this”
And…
“Don’t say shut up
Say be quiet”
I am from journals,
One from every year
Since 6th grade.
At first I hated it
But now I can’t get enough!
I am from the
Spaghetti-on-Sunday tradition,
Salmon and Kale,
Hamburger Macaroni & Cheese,
Mashed Potatoes,
And Peas
I am from Renee and Tyrone,
Lillie and Donnell,
Patricia and Ambris,
Amir, Ambris, and Mayah,
My family.
I am Briah-Amira McCutchen
And this is who I am.
