You Never Came
By Shantelle Allen

You said you loved me dearly,
Who can I really blame?
Those words were said with emptiness
Because you never came.

You never came when my heart was sad
Or when my eyes were filled with tears.
You never came to soothe my sorrow,
To calm my worries or my fears.

You never came to hear me sing
Or listen to my prayer.
You never came to watch my game,
I wondered where you were.

You never came to share my joy
Or wipe my weeping eye.
You never came when I did wrong,
You never asked me why.

You never came to say goodnight
Or tuck me into bed.
You never saw one deed I did
Or heard a word I said.

You never came to hug me
Or kiss my little bruise.
You never brought me ice cream
Or took me on a cruise.

I love you anyway dad
But wish you weren’t the same.
I’ve found a real father, dad
Because you never came.
