On March 17, many Pencader Charter High School students walked into school wearing their favorite green shirts. Students were allowed to step out of dress code for the day in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day.

But even the most decked out students probably did a double take when they caught a glimpse of something only the luck of the Irish could bring: a real-life leprechaun walking the halls of Pencader High.

Larry Isakoff, a special education teacher at Pencader, loves to joke around with students and faculty. Likewise, his students love to joke around with him. One of the jokes Isakoff is used to hearing about is his height. Standing five feet even, Isakoff’s students take advantage of the opportunity. In fact, the short jokes were the reason behind Isakoff dressing up as a leprechaun on St. Patrick’s Day.

Isakoff arrived at school that day wearing a full leprechaun outfit, from the green top hat to the green pants. He went as far as to dye his beard a bright orange to make the transformation complete.

Days before St. Patrick’s Day, he was getting more jokes about his height, being compared to a leprechaun. Isakoff figured that if people were going to make the jokes, he might as well go with it.

When Head of School Brad Catts heard Isakoff’s idea and was on board with it, Isakoff was convinced to go costume shopping.

“He gave me the thumbs up,” laughed Isakoff, “and if my boss tells me it’s a good idea, I’m going to do it!”

Isakoff got a lot of double takes and confused looks that day, and to him it was worth it.

“Some of the reactions were priceless,” he said.

Some of the students even took pictures with him. Many stood and just stared at this unusual spectacle.

This was the first year Pencader got a visit from a leprechaun, but it won’t be the last.

“I spent the money on the costume,” said Isakoff, “so yes I will definitely do it again.”

Being a first-year teacher at the school, Isakoff definitely made a name for himself. And everyone now knows he can certainly take a joke.
