What kid wouldn’t like to spend his summer tubing in the Brandywine River, ice skating, swimming, bowling, participating in team sports, and creating arts and crafts?
These are some of the activities Pencader Charter High School is planning to make available to 6-12 year olds this summer when the New Castle school introduces its first summer camp.
The camp will be open Mondays through Fridays from June 14 to July 23.
“Our expectations for the first year are to have kids come to a camp where they can be safe, have fun, enjoy summer, and take a break from school,” said camp director Steve Quimby.
The camp runs from 9 am to 3 pm each day, but there is also a before-care offered from 7-9 am and an after-care offered from 3-5 pm.
The cost of the main camp is $150 each week. The before-care is an additional $25 per week and the after-care is an additional $50 per week. There is also a registration fee of $25 per family.
Children can join the camp for the entire six weeks or attend two or more weeks. Registration and a $100 deposit are due April 1. The full payment is due May 28.
“We hope to have around 50-100 kids each week,” said Quimby, who teaches history and coaches the baseball team at Pencader.
Pencader also plans to make a lunch program available at a cost of $20 per week.
“We are currently working on a lunch program,” said Quimby. “However, we will be at the local Bowlerama two days a week, and they will provide campers an appropriate lunch. We also hope to have a special treat at least once a week.”
Pencader is requiring its camp counselors to be certified in CPR and first-aid training, and also to be trained in conflict resolution. According to the application that campers must complete, counselors will be responsible for no more than 10 children at all times.
Registration forms are available online at www.pencadercharter.org and also at the school, which is located at 170 Lukens Drive.
Registration forms and payments should be sent to: Pencader Charter High School, Attn: Summer Camp Registrar, 170 Lukens Drive, New Castle Delaware 19720.
Anyone with questions about the camp can contact Steve Quimby at the school’s main number: 302-573-7760.
