An old spring excitement is back in action, as the 2010 season is underway for the Pencader Charter High School girls soccer team.
With 15 returning players, the Titans are shooting to improve on last year’s record of 3-12. Despite the rough record, last year’s young squad felt it worked well together and showed progress as the year went on.
“I believe the team will succeed more than last year,” said senior defender Lisa Blakely, “because we grew as a team physically and emotionally.”
Pencader is hoping to get its first win of the season Monday when it plays at Appoquinimink at 3:30 pm. The titans have started 2010 in an 0-3 hole, with losses to St. George’s Tech (8-2), Mount Pleasant (8-0), and Caravel Academy (6-0).
Here is a quick look at this year’s Titans:
The strikers are Kristen Blakely, Aba Dapaah, Brooke Hite, Ria Karavisilis, and Mariela Reiza.
The midfielders are Kristina Goonan, Brittany Defillipo, Miranda Harper, Kelci Hoskins, Ryan Pacana, and Joselyn Castro.
The defenders are Kattie Fox, Candace Beach, Lisa Blakely, Nicole Mehaney, Jennifer Weeks, Maya Hackett, and Carli White.
In goal for Pencader are Rochelle Balan and Ria Karavisilis.
The coaching staff consists of head coach Geoff Daras, assistants Lauren Story, Dave Duhadaway, and Mike Rust, and managers Jeremy Little and Alex Kodzo.
Daras is hoping that Hoskins, a junior and one of the 15 returning players, will be one of the team’s main leaders on the field. Her hard work and dedication should be even more of a benefit if other players follow her example.
This year’s team has much greater expectations than last year’s. One such goal is to finish the season with a .500 or better winning percentage.
The Titans hope to get that ball rolling in the right direction on Monday at Appoquinimink.
