The Pencader Charter High School track and field team recently kicked off its second season, and the Titans are still racing to capture their first team victory.
The boys and girls teams each started the 2010 season with losses to Hodgson Vo-Tech and Appoquinimink. The boys fell 79-39 to Hodgson and 93-43 to Appoquinimink, while the girls fell 59-38 and 104-28.
Before the season started, the team reflected on last year’s inaugural varsity season.
“For a first-year team, we did excellent,” said head coach Albert Horsey, whose team went 2-6 in dual meets in 2009.
Although last year’s team excelled in some areas, there was still room for improvement. To help in that department, Pencader hired a new coach, Bryce Gains, who was a state champion in high school and a national champion in college.
Now the team has higher goals, which include battling for the conference championship. Another goal is to have somebody qualify in every event at states.
“As a team, we are doing better than last year, so we will see better results, both team-wise and individually,” said sophomore Erica Wheatley, who is co-captain of the girls team.
The Titans hope to excel in two events this season: the boys 4 x 800 and the girls 4 x 400. This goal should be attainable, with hard work, dedication, and leadership exemplified by the captains. The girls captains are Wheatley and junior Aaron Pennington, while the boys captains are seniors Jerome Smith and Darrell Miller-Smith.
“As far as the team goes, we are older, more mature, and more experienced,” said Smith. “Look out for us.”
Track fans and meet attendees should should be on the lookout for the following: Wheatley, junior Suan Allen, sophomore Samantha Furgurson, seniors Bobby Wright and Miller-Smith, and sophomore Seth Cottom. Allen has already tasted success this season, placing first in the 300-meter run against Hodgson.
Later this month, more Titan athletes will hope to taste success at the prestigious Penn Relays, which will be held April 22-24 at the University of Pennsylvania.
